DIY; Mom Jeans to High Waisted Shorts

April 30, 2013

Here is a DIY tutorial on how to turn old mom jeans into high waisted shorts! I've always thought it was quite simple, but people always ask me how, so I decided to document what I did last time. Here is the how to on two different styles, cuffed and cut off!

I started with two pairs of jeans. I went to my local thrift store, and they were have a sale and I got both of these mom jeans for a dollar each. A pair of levi's (SO exciting!) and a pair of liz claibornes (okay random.. but nice!).

First; Levi's

Note how terrible and lumpy these look.

Put the jeans on and make a line where you want to cut, then using sharp scissors cut across the line.

After I took these I put them through the wash to fray, photos of me wearing them frayed are in my next post. It makes such a difference!

It's strange how cutting off the legs makes such a different to the way they sit on your butt and hips.

On these ones I drew the line slightly lower than what I wanted. I coated the edges in clear nail polish to prevent fraying and then rolled them up.

Pretty simple, but fun and absolutely unique.
I'm already dreaming up ways to customize these even further (lace, studs, fabric paint). So fun!

  1. I like to cut jeans into shorts too when they are worn out at the knee caps, you did a good job here and buying thrifted jeans is cheaper than buying new jean shorts!!

  6. A simple DIY indeed, but still a great thing to do! Wish I had some jeans to do that to, but I don't think I have one.
Anyhow, they look great on you! Short and long!

  8. I've upcycled many 80s Levis'! I love to put lace on the legs or ombre bleach them. Especially black ones! You've made yourself some really nice shorts!
