September is National Honey Month! Last week I went to an event, 'Honey, It's a Party!' at Follain, Follain is a healthy beauty store in the South End Neighborhood of Boston. I cannot say enough about that place and will definitely be doing an in depth post soon, but for now let's get to the honey!

Mary from Follow the Honey in Cambridge came and taught us all about honey. The journey of a bee's life, how honey is made, and the infinite types of honey! Mary facilitated a honey tasting, and explained the reasons for the different colors, consistencies, and flavors. Mary owns a business called Follow the Honey located (not far from Free People!) in Cambridge, MA. A shop full of different types of honey; local and from all over. There is also a hive deck up top! Definitely already planning my visit.

The event also had endless mulled cider and featured products you can by in-store that contain honey, as well as beauty tips and tutorials from the lovely ladies at Follain. They explained the benefits of honey for the skin and gave us four perfect DIY Honey Treatments;

For Dry Skin;
1 teaspoon raw honey
1 teaspoon mashed avocado
1 teaspoon plain whole milk yogurt

Mix ingredients in a small bowl until smooth. Spread the mixture over your face and let it sit for 20-30 minutes before washing it off. The fats in the avocado and whole milk yogurt are deeply moisturizing to the skin, while the lactic acid in the yogurt smooths your skin, refines pores, and stimulates collagen production.

For Sensitive Skin;
2 teaspoons raw honey
1 teaspoon aloe vera gel

Stir the aloe and hoey together and apply overr your face. Leave it on for about 10-20 mintues. Aloe soothes inflammation and calms your skin, perfect for those with sensitive, irritated skin.

For Acne Prone Skin;
3 teaspoons raw honey
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Mix honey and cinnamon together, and apply to your face. Leave the mask on for 10-30 minutes. The antibacterial properties of both honey and cinnamon are especially beneficial for acne-prone skin. This can also be used as a spot treatment. **Cinnamon can occasionally be irritating if your skin is really sensitive, so you may want to do a patch test on the back of your hand first.

For Scars and Dark Spots;
2 teaspoons raw honey
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Combine the lemon juice and honey, and apply the mixture to your face. Allow it to sit for 20-30 minutes. Lemon juice exfoliates your skin, brightens dark spots, and fades scars. Your skin will feel smooth and soft right away, but it make take a few applications to notice a real different in scars and spots.

I seriously suggest giving at least one of these treatments a try! And if you are a local definitely make sure to stop by Follain for the best healthy beauty goodies and Follow the Honey for the best honey! Not a local? No problem. Shop online at Follain here and Follow the Honey here!
